after chatting with a fellow colleague (he's working with client) who would've been my senior if he had stayed in my company, i found out that he's an elite in certain hard-core (no, not what you're thinking about) IT stuffs. things like assembly programming etc.
one of the exploits he did was to write an assembly code to find a backup image of a deleted partition of the hard drive, when an important system hard-drive failed over at the head office. the assembly code basically does a check on the hard drive, scanning for any backup copy of the partition, and he successfully extracted all the data when everybody else had given up.
i was like, wow, that's totally cool!
and i realized how i missed out on certain things, that i'm sure if i had spent more time looking at them and tweaking around, i would've learned and mastered. not that i regretted any of my youth or uni time, i had a great time learning things, having fun, i have great friends, we spent time doing a lot of crazy things together (remember the blue screen thing in lab that we talked about yesterday ;)) etc etc.
and things that i realized i could've learned but put it away and thus not mastering it (which i should have!) are, among all :
i) assembly language
ii) linux (i mean, *really* master it, not just tweaking around)
iii) c++ and vb
i looked at assembly language (some virus codes) when i was 16, felt dizzy, and left it at that. never looked at it again.
i tried to install linux in my computer but it just refuses to install itself :(. did it a few times over the next few months after the first installation, and it still refuses. guess we're not fated. but that doesn't stop me from gaining control of the machine of one of the finest linux masters in the campus ;). but at that time he was still a beginner, so... not really an achievement anyway.
i didn't get really deep into c++, things like system programming and MFC programming. felt woozy when i looked into the seemingly complex codes in uni (doesn't look too complex now.. i wonder why), so i left it at that. aih~
i would've had a blast of a time learning them. but again, if i had spent more time there, i probably would lose time in learning other things that i've learnt. oh well, the world turns out the way it is. i'm not complaining :)
