conditioning

this is somehow related to dancing. so if u're not interested u can skip this article :)

i remember once, when i was learning body isolation, a person asked me "why do you keep doing that?", refering to my repetitive practice of shoulder isolation, which i'm practising to let my body relax and get ready for that kind of movement, if in future i managed to master it. i was taken aback, barely recovering from the shock when he continued, "i don't think you should be doing that. you're not even at that level yet." while shaking his head, giving the impression he was somehow.. err.. disgusted (?) with that. i'm shocked because i thought, as a dance student himself, he would've understood the situation (since of course, he'd most probably been through it before) and encourage instead of discourage. well, probably coz i looked too silly. heh.

always, whenever we all do something, there is a dilemma when trying out new stuffs. on one end, u're encouraged to try out new things, who knows one day you might be good at it, rite? but at the other end, if you keep doing it when you're not good at it, you end up looking funny. the dilemma will be whether to continue trying or not, coz if you continue, you risk looking silly further and longer (the stupidity of our actions are directly proportionate to the number of people looking at us, one might say). however, if you do NOT continue doing (in my words, "practising") the silly things, you might never know if you would master it one day?

sometimes you can hear people saying (referring to a fellow s@lsera), "look at her. she shouldn't be doing that, look so silly." i'd say, give her a break, people. we all should be understanding enough to allow people to experiment with new styles, irregardless whether it is silly or not. one time or another, we ourselves will be experimenting with new things that looked silly, so please do unto others what you want others to do unto you. if u're too freakin' gutless to try out new things in fear of looking silly, you are free to gloat in your deep ravine forever and never learn anything; just don't insult people who's trying their best to learn new things at the cost of humiliating themselves in front of others. that takes guts. *HOWEVER*, there is an exception. if the person is experimenting with new styles which looked silly, and at the same time mistakenly thought that he's _really_ good at it, that's a totally different issue altogether. people don't just look in awe (omigod, that's so cool!) at stylish things u know. they look in awe (omigod, that silly guy! huge nuts!) at silly things too. so if you care about how other people think of u, add a pinch of humility. that oughta tone the gossips down a bit.

back to the main topic, i actually don't mind the feedback. however, i totally disagree with that the guy said. not being at that level doesn't mean we cannot prepare our bodies for that kind of level, if and should we reach it, some day. i totally believe in preparation, and conditioning my body for that kind of move/style, although it can look silly in the beginning, is just a step towards that ability. if u're at that level, and your body is not prepared for that kind of movement, no matter what you do you still have to go through that silly phase of getting your body ready for it. latinos are able to learn and do all those cool moves easily because they body is somehow attuned and ready for them. why? because they do this since young.

and that only mean one thing, that their body has been conditioned for it. so, why not condition our own body first if we know we're going to want to learn that in the future?
